Steam Crashes on Launch / 19.0.1

I've installed with the searched bottle, I've installed from a fresh download. I've tried some start-with command options. It launches, checks for updates, then just dissapears. Log follows:

Running launcher: Steam (StartMenu.C^3A_ProgramData_Microsoft_Windows_Start+Menu/Programs/Steam/Steam.lnk)

edit/update:Here's a whole crashlog if it helps
https://www.dropbox.com/s/v5y31f94gztspip/steam-crashlog.cxlog?dl=0

Exact same situation for me.
Fresh installed macOS Catalina 10.15.4
Fresh installed Crossover 19.0.1

HW: Mac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017)
4,2 GHz Core i-7, 32GB Mem, AMD R 580 8G

After installed Steam in CO, i can start Steam and it will update. After Update it crashes and Steam dies.

I wonder, there is no solution for this issue. I am currently running a CO trial and my decision to buy CO is depending on Steam is working or not.

This is a currently known issue with Steam's automatic updates. There are a couple of solutions outlined here: https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/crossover/forum/steam?msg=224311#c6

My comment outlines how to prevent Steam for looking for updates, and Stjepan's comment immediately below give another solution that will also get around needing to redownload games.

Hi Anna,

thanks but it works only if you not have fresh installation of crossover and steam. If you setup all at fresh than it will install the actual version of steam and this is not working

Greetz

Joerg

One new information.

I also have a Macbook Pro 2019 with exact same macOS (10.15.4 with actual update).
The difference between both is, the Macbook has two graphics adapter (Intel Irix and AMD R 565x). iMac has only one (AMD R 580)
On Macbook Pro Steam is working, on iMac not, but the Macbook is from the company and i can't install games. This was only a test.
I tried to transfer the Bottle from Macbook to iMac, but same result Steam crashes.

Best regards

Joerg

This issue has been forwarded to the Official CodeWeavers Ticket System. If you have observed this issue and would like to report it as well, please open a support ticket or send an email to info@codeweavers.com with a description of what you are seeing and a link to this post.

Thank you!
The CodeWeavers Team

Hi Joerg,

I forwarded this to our support team so that we can track the specific hardware where Steam is not working. Thank you so much for the details - that is extremely helpful, since obviously we want this to work on all hardware :)

Thanks,
Anna

Thank you. I'm also experiencing this issue. Catalina, latest update of Crossover, etc. I submitted a ticket over a week ago and I was told "just reinstall it", which I had already tried 5+ times to various different bottles and Windows OSs. Quite maddening. I hope this gets resolved soon!

For anyone having problems with steam library and store view You can use web browser to find the game you want to install on Steam. After clicking “Play Game” on Got Steam window right click “Yes, Steam is installed” and copy Steam app address.
Then in CrossOver use Run Command and paste the Steam app link.
After login to Steam it will install the game. Then you can again use “Run Command” to create a CrossOver shortcut ("Save Command As a Launcher") to Your game, that You can always use without going trough Steam app view.

Update for anyone running Steam on Mac: there is finally some real good news! The latest Steam Beta client includes a launch option that can be used to fix the endless breakage :D

Note: Please also make sure that you have "Enable GPU accelerated rendering" unchecked under Steam Settings -> Interface.

The following instructions should work for existing Steam bottles. However, I did find that it didn't work correctly for one old Steam bottle that I had -- if this happens, please try with a fresh Steam bottle and then you can use Stjepan's trick (see below) for moving your installed games over :) (Also, please let me know if the existing bottle update didn't work and you needed a new one -- this is useful information for us.)

1) Switch to the Steam Beta Client:

  • Click on the Steam icon in the upper right hand corner of the dock (to the left of the time).
  • Click on "Settings" to open Steam settings
  • Under the "Account" tab, look for "Beta participation" and click "CHANGE" to opt in to the Steam Beta Update
  • Steam will automatically prompt you to restart Steam -- Do this.

2) Close Steam completely.

3) Run Steam with the launch options: "-allosarches -cef-force-32bit"

  • Right-click on the Steam icon in CrossOver
  • Click "Run with Options..."
  • add the following options to the Command Line Options box: -allosarches -cef-force-32bit
  • Click "Run"

Currently, you will need to run Steam in this way (following Step 3) every single launch. If you do not use those launch options, it will still be broken. We are working on a solution embedded in CrossOver to automate this process, but this is the bleeding edge fix :)

Stjepan's trick:

  1. Open bottle c: drive and move SteamApps folder to desktop.
  2. Delete Steam folder.
  3. Reinstall Steam into same bottle, login and update Steam
  4. Move and replace Your original SteamAps folder with all installed games from desktop back to the bottle.
