I have installed and reinstalled Steam via Crossover multiple times, with the Crosstie, the "Install Steam" button in the Recommended applications on Crossover, and just with the normal installer file, installing it like any other game, and none seems to work. It shows the "Checking for updates" on the first time launching, with the steam UI, and then closes. Every time after that it shows an X11 esque GUI window, followed by the window closing, and Steam failing to open. I can see the Steam application in the top left, but no window opens. I would really appreciate any help I could get with this, as I've been trying for multiple hours.
Believe it or not, I had the same problem on the Linux Steam client, without Crossover being involved.
So if you still have a steam bottle, using the "run command dialog", type steam --reset. That has solved the issue for me on my Linux box.
I can't be sure that this is the problem since this involves a Mac and Crossover, but since the symptoms are the same, it can't hurt.
Second, have you tried disabling the "Mac driver" by enabling the Use legacy X Window System checkbox? Just to see if it solves the issue.
