Xante iQueue print server not serving

In my spare time, I've been trying to get Xante iQueue to run under pretty much every flavour of Crossover since v.8. The results have been consistently unsuccessful, so maybe it's time to ask for help.

The software installs easily and, once launched, it can communicate with its target printer. It also sees the host network interface and reports the appropriate IP address on the LAN. However, it won't accept any incoming print jobs, which pretty much renders it useless as a print server.

The print spooler that is trying to send the job reports the printer as "Busy"

I've tried this under every permutation I can think of. Bottles for XP through Windows 8. Every Windows version setting from Win98 through Win8 in the WINE Configuration control panel. With and without the experimental Mac driver (for each). Full screen and virtual desktop (for each).

I'm kinda out of ideas. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Hi Richard
I am not the best qualified to advise you on this subject but I just went to the Xantei iQueue web site to look at prerequisites for the product and found it requires drivers, and has both Mac And PC drivers. You may be able to install on your Mac. Besides that I am afraid you will not get any farther in crossover as it is not possible to install drivers under cross over.

To accept print jobs, from what you describe, it opens a port on the eth interface. Is the firewall on the machine on which you installed the Xante product active? If active is it allowing incoming connections to the port that iQueue opens?

The drivers are to print to the server from a remote machine. They're just Postscript Printer Description files. Printing to the Xante, with or without iQueue, uses the system's Postscript driver.

(A Postscript Geek's Pet Peeve: Vendors who call PPD's drivers.)

No firewall on the host machine. Even if there were, I don't think the port would be the problem as I routinely print to a copy of iQueue running in a VM on the same machine. iQueue itself, when launched under Crossover, reports "Unknown Network Problem".

When you installed in the VM did you need to install the ppd drivers or will it work with out them. It seems to me when running the app it my be looking in the wine registry for the drivers.
Just a thought start your app from the run command and under Debug Options Check create Log and post it. Maybe one of the really smart advocates can figure it out.

What port does the software listen to? If it uses a port < 1024 you may have to run it as root.

No PPD is required on the server, unless you want to print from the host computer to the server. All a PPD file does is tell a system's Postscript engine about the particular capabilities of the target printer. Since iQueue already knows everything there is to know about the Illumina printer, it's not necessary.

iQueue uses port 9100

Thanks, Gary.

I've done as you suggested and generated a log of iQueue launching.

I'm not at all sure how to attach it to a forum post, so I'll copy and past the text here. You're right, maybe somebody will get an "Ah ha!" out of it.

From the log I generated:

fixme:service:QueryServiceConfig2W Level 6 not implemented
fixme:service:QueryServiceConfig2W Level 6 not implemented
fixme:ole:RemUnknown_QueryInterface No interface for iid {00000019-0000-0000-c000-000000000046}

Does anyone know what these mean?

"not implemented", to me, means that Wine/Crossover just doesn't offer that API. Often not a death sentence though, but it could be.

As for the "no interface" thing, it's probably related to the above, as having been unable to "query", an "interface" couldn't have been found.

But honestly, that's just my interpretation, I don't "know" any of this.

Thanks for that, J-P

So it sounds suspiciously as if the "guts" I need just aren't there. Since this isn't worth going the paid development route, it seems that my best course of action is just to continue doing what I've been doing: keep trying each new version in the hopes that the functions I need make it into some future release.

Thanks everybody for playing!
