Apps pause when minimized

When I play a game like Everquest and minimize the app in MacOS the game rendering pauses. I maximize the game and see the last frame for 5 seconds or so, then it catches up. I don't get discounted from the eq servers, but the pause makes it annoying to tab in and out of Crossover.

Any ideas if this is normal?

I am not familiar with that specific game. You might see the behavior you prefer if the game will run in Full Screen Windowed mode and if you give the game its own Desktop to use. Set a keybind to switch Desktops (I think the default is control-left arrow/right arrow, I use command-left arrow/right arrow) then use the keybind to get to your main Desktop to use the Finder or other applications while the game continues to run in its own Desktop.

This is the right answer. I have had similar issues in the past, albeit worse as the game never recovers from being minimised. Windowed fullscreen, or simply windowed and then using Mac’s own fullscreen function for the window is the way to go.
