Does developer mode still need enabling on x86 chromebooks to run crossover for android?

The article to get Crossover installed is quite old now as android app support is now native so my question is do we still need to enable dev mode for crossover to work?

What model do you have?

My Acer Chromebook 14 recently got enabled the Play Store on the Dev Channel (not dev-mode)
