How to get Antivirus Software to Ignore CrossOver

This tutorial is for anyone with Bitdefender, Avast, or any other antivirus software installed that is incorrectly flagging (and potentially deleting) CrossOver files. If you are looking for an explanation of why this is happening, click here for a note from Jeremy, the founder of CodeWeavers.

Essentially, all that you have to do is tell your antivirus software that CrossOver is safe.

1) Temporarily turn off your antivirus software and install CrossOver.

This is the simplest way to avoid the software messing up your download. If you are unable to temporarily turn off the software, you can try downloading a fresh version of CrossOver and immediately adding an exception for the file in your downloads folder (the path should be similar to /Users/(your home folder)/Downloads/CrossOver.app) before attempting to install.

2) Folders to tell your antivirus software to avoid

These are the folders that you will need to add as exceptions in your antivirus software. If you are unsure of how to do this, there are screenshots from some popular antivirus software below step 2.

The "Library" folder is hidden by default. Press command+shift+dot when the Finder is open to see hidden folders.

/Users/(your home folder)/Applications/CrossOver /Users/(your home folder)/Library/Application Support/CrossOver /Applications/CrossOver.app**

**This location is only correct if you installed CrossOver "normally" by clicking "Move to Applications" without renaming the CrossOver file. If you did not install in the standard way, you will need to adjust this path accordingly.

In order to find these folders in Finder, it is easiest to click on the current folder in the top center

Then select "Macintosh HD" which will start you at / and from there you can find /Applications and /Users:

This is the end of the main tutorial. Below are screenshots of how to create exceptions with some popular antivirus software.
