RootsMagic crashes on launch with "Invalid operation in GDI+ (Code: 1)." message

Since the update to RootsMagic 5.0.4.1, users will find that RootsMagic 5 is crashing on launch with a message saying "Invalid operation in GDI+ (Code: 1)."

Fixing your install of RootsMagic to solve this problem is easy.

First, launch Crossover, and then go to your Configure>Manage Bottles menu. Highlight the RootsMagic 5 bottle, and then click on Applications, and then the "install software" button. This will open up the install software menu with the "RootsMagic 5" bottle pre-selected.

Now, go to the "Community Supported Applications" section and select the package called "Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI+". Click on "install". Crossover will now download and install this package, which will be very brief.

That's it! RootsMagic should function, again.

Note that if you have told Crossover not to update the Install Software menu in the past, you might not see that "Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI+" package in the "Community Supported Applications" section of the install software menu. If that's the case, close the Install Software menu, and then go to the following webpage:

https://www.codeweavers.com/compatibility/browse/name/?app_id=8227

Click on the green button that says "Install Platform SDK Redistributable: GDI+ via CrossTie" and open the file in Crossover. This will open up Crossover's Install Software menu, and you'll then be prompted to "Select a bottle into which to install". Select your "RootsMagic 5" bottle from the list, and then click "install" to proceed. That's it! RootsMagic should function, again.

Also, note that any brand new installs of RootsMagic in Crossover from now on shouldn't have this problem - we've already adjusted the "CrossTie" file to incorporate the fix.

As recently posted in our forums (here), RootsMagic 5 is affected by the removal of the GDI+ installer from Microsoft's Download Center.

There are two ways to deal with this.  The fastest way is to set an override within your RootsMagic 5 bottle.

Open the Bottle Manager.

On a Mac:

 1. Click on the CrossOver icon so that "CrossOver" appears next to the Apple Icon at the top of your screen.
 2. Click "Configure" to access the drop down menu and choose "Manage Bottles"

On Linux:

 1. Open a terminal and run:
/opt/cxoffice/bin/cxsetup

or
~/cxoffice/bin/cxsetup

For Both:

 1. Select the "RootsMagic 5" bottle and then click "Control Panel"
 2. In the "Control Panel" tab select and launch "Wine Configuration"
 3. In the "Applications" tab click "Add Application..."
 4. Browse to:  Program Files-> RootsMagic 5
 5. Select "RootsMagic.exe" and then click "Open"
 6. With "RootsMagic.exe" highlighted in the "Applications" tab, click the "Libraries" tab
 7. Click on the field below "New override for library:" and select "gdiplus" and finally click "Add"
 8. gdiplus should appear in the "Existing overrides:" catagory, highlight it and click "Edit..."
 9. Select "Native (Windows)" and then click "OK" "Apply" "OK" "OK"
 10. Close the Bottle Manager and launch RootsMagic 5.  The crash on launch should be gone and RootsMagic 5 should launch.

If this does not work please open a Support Ticket or email ninjas@codeweavers.com.  The other option is a fresh install of RootsMagic 5, but it would be better to try the above and then email in if it doesn't work.
