Can't quite make it start

I could get Ether Saga to download and install using Crossfire Games, but I don't see the proper login screen. When I try to run it, I get a little screen that says "File not found", followed by another little screen that says "Insufficient buffer". I verified the downloaded files twice, so whatever file the application is looking for should be there.

I got it to run under CX Games 7.2 on Linux (Fedora 10 32-bit) - I downloaded the "regular" downloader (eso_Downloader_v4.exe), as opposed to the torrent downloader which I could not get to work with Crossover. The install of the .exe was quite fast with Crossover. Upon starting it up, I realized why - the program I installed is another installer for the game. This "second" installer took a while to download the full client, about an hour. When I launched the full client, I then had to patch, which took many hours.

With that complete, though, I was able to login to the west cost server, create a character, and play for a bit. Not much of a gamer, so I didn't play for very long. There are definitely some background graphics glitches, but getting it to run on CX Games Linux didn't require fancy tricks as much as patience.

Great!

I anxiously await the results of your Mac test!

I was able to install in the same manner with the mac - installation takes a while, but I didn't need any tricks to get it working (again, using CX Games 7.2, not a nightly).

The only problem is that I don't seem to have the correct fonts on my system or in the bottle, so almost all of the writing in the game renders as a series of boxes, which of course makes it unplayable. This wasn't a problem on Linux, but I'm not sure what kind of logs to run that will tell me the exact font I need. Anyone have any ideas?

I wish I knew which fonts you need. The missing font is probably a Mac system font, but I can't swear to that. If I can get Ether Saga up and running, I'll try to recognize the font.

How did you install Ether Saga? Did you give it its own bottle, or stuff it into the winxp bottle?

I'm going to try this under the beta in the next day or three.

It installs fine but the loading screens are messed up and when i try to start the game it crashes.

I just installed it into its own, new winxp bottle. I think you'll always want to install Ether Saga into a fresh winXP bottle.

Also, I'm not sure how much luck you'll have with the beta. The beta is the pre-release candidate for CX Office, and doesn't have any of the graphical hacks that are incorporated in CX Games. It could work, but all of my testing (including successfully running the game on Linux) has been with a normal, production version of CX Games 7.2.0.

Hmm.

I gave Ether Saga its own bottle. Did you manage to get IE 6 in there? Perhaps we need IE 8, or Silverlight.

I don't know why it regressed under the current beta.

I actually didn't install IE6 - all I've got in the bottle are the Crossover HTML engine and windows installer 2.0 (both installed by default), and Ether Saga.

Regressions with apps are relatively uncommon, but not unusual, particularly with unsupported apps. Sometimes patches that correct a problem in one supported and highly-tested application inadvertently break functionality in another that we don't actively test.

Also, I can't stress enough that the beta available right now is a CX Office build, not CX Games. The current beta will probably behave poorly with many games that work fine in CX Games 7.2.

That's what I've got, although I'm not seeing Ether Saga in the bottle. Perhaps I need to reinstall it. I hope not. I am confused about why it works better for you.

Just to let you know this game works perfectly in 8.0.0b1 so just wait until then.

BTW to update when it asks you to update say no

how do u get it to work. when im done downloading it, all i see is "autorun" icon. i click it and it says install windows software window from crossover games. i need help.

If you're using Crossover Games, Ether Saga Online should be an option in the Install Software menu. Select it and proceed to install - after you create a new bottle, Crossover will automatically download and install Ether Saga, along with Direct X and a Chinese Arphic font. You shouldn't need to download Ether Saga manually on your own.

Hey Jack, is there any way you could explain to me how to manually patch Ether Saga? I can play the game without patching, but i would prefer having the past two years' worth of updates ^^
Let me know and thanks =)

Ether Saga (and all the PWI games) are very touchy when it comes to patching... you can download the patches and manually apply them... or you can try this.

First, launch Ether Saga, it will offer to update, say 'No'.

This will prompt it to check to see if the client is out of date... it should then say 'preparing to update' for a status and ask for the update method. Select 'Automatic' and then an Update Server (make sure that 'Manually select server' always stays selected), then click 'Confirm'.

Now, the launcher will update the client and possibly restart it, when it restarts, if it still offers to patch, patch. If not, you should be able to click 'Start' and launch Ether Saga.

This happens when the update client and the patched version are both out of date. The patched version will not properly update if the client is also out of date (and this does happen sometimes, not as frequently, on Windows).

If you continue to see trouble, Ether Saga is a supported application, so you can get support by either opening a support ticket or sending an email to info@codeweavers.com.

as an addendum - I sometimes find that simply downloading the necessary path file from Ether Saga's website:

http://eso.perfectworld.com/download

and then using "Manual" to select the downloaded file and patch the client is the fastest, but I've simply gotten into this habit stemming from problems with the Automatic update when we first began supporting Ether Saga. The Automatic update should work fine now, as explained above. Otherwise, patching manually is quite simple.
