Because code doesn’t write itself. A vibrant open source community requires commitment
How CodeWeavers supports open source
CodeWeavers supports the concept of open-source software. We believe that the success of open source software will bring forth new, exciting products and services. We also believe that open source software provides viable models for corporate growth.
We believe it is important for any company that relies on Free Software to make sure their software community is vibrant and rich in its own right. To that end, we are the largest supporters of the Wine Project. We do all of our work on Wine directly against the upstream Wine project; we submit our work to Wine first. We also sponsor the annual Wine conference, and take great pains to make sure that we do everything we can to keep Wine a vibrant community.
At the same time, we have to eat. Many of our own customers make their livings selling proprietary software. CodeWeavers believes that there is a place in the world for both models
CrossOver, while composed primarily of an open-source core, also contains proprietary components that comprise some of our "value add." This allows us to differentiate ourselves against the free version of Wine.
We're rebels. We're misfits. But mostly, we're software liberators. And we're very, very good at what we do. We have to be. Lots of developers work with open source, but only a tiny fraction of those are good enough to get software that was designed for one platform to work on another one. We invented CrossOver software - a unique approach to cross-platform compatibility that does not require dual-boot or another OS license. We launched PortJump to help app and game developers broaden their market beyond Windows® users. And we launched ExecMode to help organizations solve really ugly technical challenges.
