After the intro videos, the video mode switches back to normal resolution, but the last frame of the video is stuck forever in the upper left hand side of the screen and the main menu never appears. However, it is functioning - when randomly clicking, the game is actually working fine in the background.
This must have to do with the video mode switching. If you rename the video folders so the game doesn't find them, it never tries to play them - and the game works perfectly. See workaround here: https://steamcommunity.com/app/3910/discussions/0/2150972689170286674/

PPS. Big shout out to the developers and community. Despite a bit of fiddling gaming is SO MUCH BETTER than VM + Win7.
