I'm new to CrossOver, and I've downloaded the trial after seeing it at MacWorld. I want to use it to play Valve's Portal, and I successfully installed the Steam client and downloaded Portal through Steam, but when I start Portal, all I get is a white, blank window (X11-style) and no menu, no nothing.
I've tried various variations - not specifying dxlevel, no heapsize, etc. (and with no options at all) but no progress. The only difference I get is when I remove "novid", then the Valve logo movie plays (with audio), but I only get a black screen after the video.
Any pointers? I'm really interested in buying CrossOver, but if Portal doesn't work, then there is really no point for me to get it. Thanks.
A few people seem to be having trouble with Portal on the Mac.
If instead of specifying -window or whatever, have you tried enabling
'emulate a virtual desktop' in winecfg? If you enable a virtual desktop
for the Steam bottle (say a desktop size of 1024x768) and just let Portal
start in fullscreen mode (at whatever resolution, it will override the
desktop size specification).....does the behavior change any?
Since you're posting in the CrossOver Mac forum, rather than the CrossOver Games forum, I have to wonder: are you using CrossOver Games for this? You should.
(Also, the most helpful forum is likely to be the forum for Portal, rather than the generic forum for any variant of CrossOver.)
I'm running it on CrossOver Mac since the sales rep at CodeWeavers' MacWorld booth said that it'd run good on it. It's not just Portal that is refusing to run, but most Steam games, apparently.
Yeah, as I stated above, I'm running it in the "normal" crossover Mac, as instructed by the sales rep at MacWorld – I'll give it another try in the CrossOver Games app.
