It just shouldn't be this difficult. Please help. (I'm a new MAX user to boot)

You're probably better off opening a Support Ticket or emailing ninjas@codeweavers.com.
The likely trouble is that you downloaded the trial prior to doing your system upgrade to either Mountain Lion's 10.8.2 or Lion's 10.7.5. That update breaks CrossOver 11.2.1 and all prior versions. We did release a hot fix (11.2.2) that addresses the issue and gets CrossOver running.
