Can't connect to a Garmin GPS

I have a Garmin GPS which I cannot connect to. I do have the Mac OS drivers installed for the GPS so my understanding is it should be working. Any ideas of things I might try to get it to connect?

The program I'm trying to connect the GPS to is Mapwel, a program for making custom maps for the Garmin GPSes

The problem is USB, which has less then stellar support (if any) with wine/crossover.
